Panathinaikos Held to a Draw by Battling CSKA 1948 as Bulgarians Rattle the Greek Giants

Panathinaikos and CSKA 1948 played out a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their UEFA Conference League third qualifying round tie, a result far tighter than the gulf in reputation between the two sides suggested. Jagušić put the Greeks ahead in the 21st minute, but Georgi Rusev leveled things up just ten minutes later.

CSKA 1948 will feel they let a big opportunity slip. Against a Panathinaikos side stacked with names like former Barcelona keeper Peña, ex-Inter man De Vrij, and Manchester United loanee Pellistri, the Bulgarian underdogs matched their hosts and created the better second-half chances to potentially snatch all three points — Rusev was denied one-on-one by Peña, and Gashevich later rattled the crossbar in the 81st minute.

Panathinaikos started the brighter side and took the lead through Jagušić, who headed home from an Andino cross after Gashevich lost his man. But CSKA responded well, and their pressure paid off in the 31st minute when a slick move down the right ended with Cuéllar squaring for an unmarked Rusev to equalize from close range.

The second half brought more drama: Rusev was denied by Peña one-on-one, CSKA wasted a four-on-two counterattack, and Gashevich smashed the crossbar in stoppage time. CSKA held on for a well-earned draw, with sections of the 20,000-strong home crowd jeering their own star-studded lineup by full time.
