Jagiellonia Beat Rangers in Match Featuring Two Own Goals

Rangers suffered their second setback of the young season, following a draw against Dundee United in the opening round of the Scottish Premiership with a 1-2 defeat away to Jagiellonia in the Europa League. The Gers fell in front of 20,000 fans in Białystok and will now need to overturn the deficit in the return leg if they want to advance.

Rangers have historically fared well against Polish clubs in European competition, and Derek McInnes' side made the perfect start on Thursday. In just the 4th minute, left-back Thor Roomes whipped in a cross that Guilherme Montoya could only turn into his own net past goalkeeper Sławomir Abramowicz.

The home side were stunned but didn't stay behind for long. Jagiellonia leveled things up in the 13th minute when Rangers' defense lost track of Kajetan Szmyt, whose shot deflected in off Emanuel Fernandez for the equalizer. Just eight minutes later, visiting goalkeeper Ivor Pandur could only parry a Jesús Imaz effort straight back into danger, and this time Szmyt made no mistake, tapping home the rebound to complete the turnaround.

Rangers' substitutions helped them wrestle back control in the second half, and the Scots created several good chances of their own — though Jagiellonia's counterattacks remained a threat throughout. On one such break, Nick Prelec found himself with a clear sight of goal but shot straight into the body of a defender.
